East West University (EWU), Dhaka solemnly commemorated the first anniversary of the July Mass Uprising 2024 on 18 July 2025, paying heartfelt tribute to the brave individuals who lost their lives while fighting for democracy and civil rights in Bangladesh.

The commemorative event held on the EWU campus in Aftabnagar began with a tree plantation ceremony, symbolizing resilience and hope for democratic growth. This was followed by the inauguration of a photo exhibition featuring powerful images from the 2024 movement, evoking strong emotions and historical reflection.

Held in the Manzur Elahi Auditorium, the main program began with the National Anthem of Bangladesh, followed by a moment of silence to honor the fallen heroes of the July Revolution 2024. A significant part of the program included experience sharing by EWU students who had actively participated in the movement, giving voice to stories of courage, unity, and sacrifice.

This event concluded with a cultural program that celebrated the unwavering spirit of resistance and the pursuit of democratic values through music, poetry and performance.

East West University Wins Big at SCLS National Law Olympiad 2025

Department of Law at East West University (EWU) is thrilled to announce that its students have won the championship title at the SCLS National Law Olympiad 2025 (Season V), held on July 11–12, 2025.

Organized by the Society for Critical Legal Studies (SCLS), this national-level law competition brought together 40 teams from leading law schools across Bangladesh. The theme of this year’s Olympiad was “Environmental Law and Climate Justice.”

Champion Team from EWU: Excellence in Environmental Legal Advocacy

EWU champion team—Afrin Sultana, Anika and Tanjim Maliha—clinched the top honor with their agenda titled:

“Beyond the Façade: Unpacking Corporate Social Responsibility and Environmental Accountability in Bangladesh.”

They demonstrated exceptional legal research, advocacy, and presentation skills across five rigorous rounds.

Individual Honors: Olympian of the Season and Rebellious Spirit Award

Afrin Sultana Anika was awarded the highly prestigious “Olympian of the Season” title for her consistent excellence throughout the competition.

Another EWU team, consisting of Syeda Nabila Haque and Kazi Ayman Awsaf, also made a remarkable impression. Their agenda, “Legal Personhood for Environmental Entities,” focused on innovative environmental legal frameworks. Syeda Nabila Haque received the “Rebellious Spirit Award” for scoring the highest in the written test.

EWU Faculty Contribute as Adjudicators

Nabila Farhin (Senior Lecturer) and Ali Mashraf (Lecturer) from the EWU Department of Law served as adjudicators during the competition. Their involvement reflects the department’s ongoing commitment to academic excellence and legal mentorship.

EWU Alumna Abida Islam Pranty Joins University of Cambridge as Postdoctoral Research Associate

East West University (EWU) is proud to celebrate a significant academic milestone achieved by one of its distinguished alumni, Abida Islam Pranty, who has been appointed as a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the Cambridge Institute for Medical Research, University of Cambridge, UK. She will begin this new chapter in February 2025.

Pranty, who enrolled at EWU in Spring 2014 as a pharmacy undergraduate, has built an impressive academic and research career. After graduating from EWU, she pursued a Master’s in Translational Neuroscience at the University Hospital of Düsseldorf, Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf, Germany. She recently earned her PhD in Biology from the same university with the highest academic distinction, summa cum laude, for her groundbreaking research in stem cell-based disease modeling and regeneration.

Her innovative work has been published in leading international journals such as Stem Cell Reports, EMBO, Cells, and Scientific Reports (Nature). As a postdoctoral researcher at Cambridge, Pranty will investigate rare respiratory diseases using advanced stem cell and lung organoid models, aiming to contribute novel insights and therapeutic approaches to this critical area of biomedical science.

EWU takes immense pride in Pranty’s remarkable achievements and her commitment to advancing global health through science. She now joins a growing list of EWU alumni who are making their mark in postdoctoral research at world-renowned institutions including Harvard Medical School, the University of California, the University of South Alabama, the University of Hamburg, and the University of Greifswald.

We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Dr. Abida Islam Pranty and wish her continued success in her research endeavors. Her journey exemplifies the excellence of EWU graduates and serves as an inspiration to students aspiring to make a global impact through academic and scientific pursuits.
