
Brac University Hosts Landmark International Biotechnology Conference 2025
Dhaka, Bangladesh – Brac University successfully brought together over 1,000 global experts, researchers, and students for the International Biotechnology Conference 2025 on June 20-21. Held at the university’s vibrant Merul Badda campus, the landmark event aimed to forge critical links between academia, industry and the public health sector, setting a new course for biotechnology in Bangladesh.
A Hub for Interdisciplinary Collaboration
The conference’s primary mission was to enhance interdisciplinary collaboration in biotechnology research and its practical applications. Mahbubul Alam Majumder dean of the School of Data and Sciences emphasized this synergy, stating, “Biology, technology, and computational power are now working together to solve real-world problems.”
Dr. David Dowland, Registrar of Brac University, added that the conference is a key part of the university’s commitment to “create positive impact through fruitful research” and to foster an environment that prevents intellectual property theft.
Keynote Address: Tackling National Research Challenges
Chief guest Dr. Md. Sayedur Rahman from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare delivered a powerful keynote address. He stressed the need for “intelligence, tolerance, and a goal-oriented mindset” to overcome the nation’s weak research infrastructure and emerging health challenges, highlighting that scientific progress and social development must advance together.
Showcasing Groundbreaking Research and Innovation
Two-day event was a powerhouse of knowledge exchange, featuring over 100 research paper presentations across 14 thematic tracks. Key areas of focus included:

Empowering the Next Generation of Biotech Entrepreneurs
A major highlight was the second-day plenary session, ‘Reimagining Biotech: Building Startups, SMEs and Private Sector Pathways for Biotech Graduates.’ This session provided invaluable guidance and inspiration for biotechnology students aspiring to become entrepreneurs, bridging the gap between education and industry.
Furthermore, a dynamic poster session allowed students to present their innovative research, facilitating direct engagement and knowledge exchange with leading researchers in the field.
A Platform for Future Growth
Closing ceremony featured remarks from Dr. Md. Sagir Ahmed director general of the National Institute of Biotechnology and Dr. Md. Firoz H. Haque chairman of Brac University’s Department of Mathematics and Natural Sciences.
In her closing remarks, conference convener Dr. Munima Haque summarized the event’s success: “This conference has created an important platform for new researchers, where the exchange of knowledge and skills for the future has been possible.” This event successfully solidified its role as a vital catalyst for the future of biotechnology in Bangladesh and beyond.
