Professor Abdul Hannan Chowdhury, VC of North South University (NSU) and chairman of Grameen Bank addressed the Indonesia Insurance Summit (IIS) 2025 with a keynote speech titled “Unlocking the Potential of Underserved Customers: The Role of Insurance.” The summit was held from May 21 to 23 in Bali and organized by the Insurance Council of Indonesia (DAI).
A Platform for Global Insurance Innovation
The IIS 2025 brought together leaders from the insurance industry, academia, government and regulatory authorities across Asia and beyond. Themed “Reimagining the Future of Insurance with Innovation for a Sustainable Future,” the summit focused on:

- Financial inclusion and innovation
- Sustainable development through insurance
- Academic-industry partnerships
Championing Inclusive Financial Systems
In his address, Professor Chowdhury emphasized the need for inclusive financial systems that bring insurance services to underserved populations. Highlighting Bangladesh’s experience with microfinance and financial inclusion, he illustrated how such models can:
- Build resilience in vulnerable communities
- Promote equity in the global insurance market
- Drive innovation in financial products
“Insurance must evolve to meet the needs of those who need it most,” said Prof Chowdhury. “Innovative, inclusive models are key to achieving sustainable and equitable development.”
Strengthening Academia-Industry Collaboration
Professor Chowdhury also stressed the importance of collaboration between academic institutions and the insurance sector to develop future-ready insurance policies. He pointed out that global economic challenges and climate-related risks require new, adaptable strategies rooted in research and innovation.
Bangladesh’s Global Leadership in Financial Inclusion
Through his participation, Professor Chowdhury highlighted Bangladesh’s growing role in global financial inclusion and sustainable development. His insights added significant value to discussions on expanding insurance access and ensuring social equity.
Upcoming Visit to NTU, Singapore
As part of his international engagement, NSU VC will visit Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore on May 25, 2025, to explore academic and research collaboration opportunities, aiming to strengthen regional partnerships in education and innovation.
