S M Al-Husainy founder trustee of Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) passed away on May 28, 2025, at the age of 94. He breathed his last while undergoing treatment at the National Heart Foundation Hospital and Research Institute in Mirpur, Dhaka.
Born in 1930, Al-Husainy was a visionary leader whose contributions were instrumental in shaping higher education in Bangladesh. As a key member of the Education, Science, Technology and Cultural Development Trust (ESTCDT), he played a central role in the establishment of IUB. He served as Chairman of the university’s former governing council and later as a member of its board of trustees. He also held the position of Chairman of the board of trustees at Chittagong Independent University (CIU).
Al-Husainy’s distinguished career in public service included serving as secretary to the government in several ministries, a member of the Planning Commission and chairman of the Bangladesh Public Service Commission. His contributions to national development spanned decades and disciplines.
He also held prominent leadership roles in a number of national organizations. He was chairman of Micro Industries Development Assistance and Services (MIDAS), chairman of Swanirvar Bangladesh and director of Micro Industries Finance Ltd. Additionally, he served as Chairman of the Bangladesh Chapter of the Society for International Development (SID), Vice President of the National Heart Foundation and a Member of the Executive Committee of Dhaka Ahsania Mission.
A committed advocate for policy dialogue and professional excellence, Al-Husainy was a Fellow of the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) and a former President of the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB), where he served for three years.
IUB community – including members of the board of trust, ESTCDT, faculty, administration, students and alumni – mourns the loss of a revered mentor and extends its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family. We pray for the eternal peace of his departed soul.

NSU Architecture Department Hosts “Meet the Department Office” Event to Foster Student Engagement and Celebrate Achievements
The Department of Architecture at North South University (NSU) hosted a dynamic and interactive event titled “Meet the Department Office – Share Your Thoughts” on campus. The event aimed to promote open dialogue, enhance student engagement, and build stronger connections between students and faculty.

Students shared insights from their internship experiences in Malaysia, notably with Dr. Tan Lukman. Inspired by these success stories, the department announced plans to extend similar internship opportunities to Sri Lanka, Indonesia, and Singapore in the upcoming semester.
ARCJAM 2025 Recognition and Award-Winning Thesis
The department proudly celebrated its recent recognition at ARCJAM 2025, a significant milestone that highlighted the growing impact of NSU Architecture students on both national and international platforms.
Additionally, the Department Chair presented the Annual Report, which reviewed academic and co-curricular initiatives. Among the standout achievements was a thesis project by Faria Hossain, which earned prestigious awards from Nippon, BSRM and KSRM, demonstrating the department’s dedication to academic excellence and innovation.

In the last semester alone, the department conducted 24 research-related activities, all with direct student participation. This reflects a strong and growing culture of collaborative research, encouraging students to pursue critical thinking and creative problem-solving.

NSU Genome Research Institute (NGRI): A Leader in Genomic Science in Bangladesh
Established in 2017, NSU Genome Research Institute (NGRI) at North South University (NSU) is Bangladesh’s first university-based institute dedicated to world-class genomic research. Since its inception, NGRI has contributed significantly to identifying genetic causes of various diseases, building genetic databases, and improving healthcare in the country.
Major Achievements:
Effectiveness of Face Masks in Preventing COVID-19: NGRI conducted the world’s largest clinical trial on face mask effectiveness, proving that surgical masks significantly reduce COVID-19 transmission, especially among the elderly. The findings were published in the prestigious journal Science and received widespread international media attention.
Research on Klebsiella pneumoniae (Superbug): This North South University institute has sequenced the genomes of over 1,000 strains of Klebsiella pneumoniae, a drug-resistant bacterium. This data can help develop new treatments against so-called “superbugs.”
Vibrio cholerae Study: In collaboration with IEDCR and icddr,b, NGRI sequenced over 200 strains of Vibrio cholerae, the bacteria responsible for cholera. The study revealed a direct link between the genetic traits of the bacteria and the severity of the disease.
Colon Cancer Research: Using next-generation sequencing (NGS), NGRI analyzed mutations across 50 genes associated with colon cancer in Bangladesh. This research supports the development of personalized medicine, allowing for more accurate and targeted treatments.
Virus Detection in Wastewater: For the first time in Bangladesh, NGRI successfully detected genetic material of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater. This method provides a potential early warning system for future outbreaks.
