24th Chinese Bridge Chinese Proficiency Competition was held in Dhaka, hosted by the Confucius Institute at North South University and the Chinese Embassy
Dhaka, May 30, 2025 — The 24th edition of the ‘Chinese Bridge’ Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign University Students was held at the auditorium of North South University (NSU) in Dhaka, showcasing the language skills and cultural understanding of Bangladeshi students.
Organized by the Chinese Embassy in Dhaka and implemented by the Confucius Institute at NSU, the event was graced by Li Shaofeng, Cultural Counselor of the Chinese Embassy, as the chief guest. Other distinguished attendees included NSU Vice-Chancellor Professor Abdul Hannan Chowdhury, Dr. Par Modiur Rahman, Registrar of Shanto Mariam University of Creative Technology, and Chinese language educators from both universities.
In his speech, Li Shaofeng emphasized the importance of language in strengthening China-Bangladesh relations. “Learning Chinese is more than just learning a language—it is part of the wave of mutual communication between our two nations,” he said, praising the students’ performances and language skills.
The event also marked the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Bangladesh, with Li highlighting the growing political trust, economic cooperation, and cultural exchange between the two countries.
Dr. Bulbul Siddiqui, Bangladeshi Director of the Confucius Institute at NSU, welcomed participants and noted that the competition plays a key role in fostering cross-cultural understanding and showcasing local talent.
This year’s competition awarded one champion, two runners-up, three third-place winners, and four Excellence Award recipients. The champion will represent Bangladesh in the international finals in China and may qualify for the International Chinese Language Teacher Scholarship Project.
Launched in 2002, the Chinese Bridge competition is a flagship event organized by the Chinese and Foreign Language Exchange and Cooperation Center under China’s Ministry of Education. Over the past 23 years, it has connected participants from over 160 countries, promoting global engagement through language learning.

As part of a strategic academic initiative to integrate practical industry exposure into the curriculum, around 30 students from Department of Pharmacy at East West University (EWU) embarked on an educational industrial visit to Popular Pharmaceuticals Ltd., one of the leading pharmaceutical companies in Bangladesh.
Department of Pharmacy at East West University students were accompanied by senior faculty members including Dr. Farhana Rizwan, Dr. Farjana Khatun and others. This visit aimed to bridge the gap between theoretical studies and practical applications in the pharmaceutical industry.
Upon arrival, the students received a warm welcome from the management of Popular Pharmaceuticals Ltd., who organized guided tours through various departments including production, quality control, packaging, research and development.

Dhaka, May 27 — The Bangladesh ECD Network (BEN) hosted a two-day national Early Childhood Development (ECD) Conference at Brac University, bringing together over 300 participants, including government officials, UN representatives, ECD practitioners and international experts.
Conference assessed progress since the adoption of the Comprehensive Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCD) Policy in 2013.
Sharmeen S Murshid adviser to the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs (MoWCA) inaugurated the event, highlighting MoWCA’s initiative to establish a dedicated Children Directorate and stressing the need for a national program to promote child and maternal well-being.
Special guests included Deepika Mehrish Sharma of UNICEF Bangladesh and BEN Chairperson Manzoor Ahmed. A posthumous award was presented to M Habibur Rahman, a long-time ECD advocate. NGO Phulki received recognition for its work with children of garment factory workers.
Event was supported by Brac IED, UNICEF, Save the Children, Plan International Bangladesh, Educo Bangladesh, ICHD and RNLI. Keynote and plenary sessions featured speakers from Asia-Pacific Regional Network for Early Childhood (ARNEC) and global Early Childhood Development Action Network (ECDAN).

Tahmina Faiz head and associate professor of the Department of Pharmacy at United International University (UIU) has been awarded the 2024 Early Career Fellowship by the Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD) for her exceptional contributions to international scientific research.

NSU SHSS Hosts Seminar on Singapore’s Foreign Policy as Part of Distinguished Lecture Series
School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS) at North South University (NSU) recently organized a seminar titled “Reflections on the Foreign Policy of a Small Country: The Case of Singapore.” Event was part of the prestigious NSU SHSS Distinguished Lecture Series, aiming to enhance students’ understanding of global affairs and foreign policy strategies.
Seminar held at the NSU Syndicate Hall featured Mitchell Lee chief of mission at the Singapore High Commission in Dhaka as the keynote speaker. Session was chaired by NSU vice chancellor and moderated by treasurer and pro vice chancellor (in-charge).
In his opening remarks dean of SHSS at NSU highlighted the strategic and pragmatic foreign policy Singapore has followed since its independence, inspired by its first foreign minister S. Rajaratnam. He emphasized Singapore’s reliance on economic strength, multilateralism and international law as key pillars of its foreign policy.
Mitchell Lee elaborated on Singapore’s diplomatic strategies, focusing on maintaining global relevance, creating political and economic space which embracing globalization. He also touched on the strengthening of Bangladesh-Singapore bilateral relations including ongoing discussions around a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) expected in the second half of 2026.
During the interactive Q&A session, NSU faculty and students actively engaged in discussions around small state diplomacy, multilateralism, and the challenges faced by countries like Singapore in an evolving global order.
