North South University’s Law Seminar on Vienna Convention Interpretation
North South University (NSU) held a seminar on “Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties—Section 3: Interpretation of Treaties (§ 31-33)” on February 10, 2025. Event held at the Moot Court Room for attracted students, academics and legal professionals interested in international law and treaty interpretation. Keynote speaker was Norwegian Ambassador to Bangladesh Håkon Arald Gulbrandsen.
Session chaired by vice-chancellor Abdul Hannan Chowdhury and special invitee Prof. Abdur Rob Khan was attended by Dr. Ishtiaque Ahmed associate professor & Barrister-at-Law. North South University dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences Prof. Dr. Md. Rizwanul Islam expressed gratitude to the distinguished guests for their presence and expertise. Gulbrandsen generously shared his perspective on the interpretation of treaties, focusing on Section 3: Interpretation of Treaties (§ 31-33).
This NSU seminar concluded with a Crest Handover Ceremony, where the keynote speaker was presented with a token of appreciation and a group photograph with all attendees.
South Asian Institute of Policy and Governance (SIPG) at North South University is set to launch its publication ‘Roots and Routes: Business Pathways in Bangladesh’ on February 12. This book serves as a critical bridge between academia, industry and entrepreneurship with providing in-depth insights into Bangladesh’s evolving business landscape. Edited by Dr. Rizwan Khair associate professor of SIPG and Syed Shahnawaz Mohsin political and international affairs analyst student of SIPG and independent researcher; Roots and Routes is a first-of-its-kind compilation of case studies from some of the country’s most influential businesses. In this book features 26 cases of companies and industries, analyzing the challenges, strategies and successes that have shaped Bangladesh’s dynamic business ecosystem.
Book offers case-based learning, strategic insights, bridging theory and practice with industry-academia collaboration. It marks a significant step toward developing a localized body of knowledge on business practices in Bangladesh, allowing local entrepreneurs to learn from success stories and real challenges within their economic environment. The book will be officially launched at North South University on February 12, 2025, at 4 pm. Event will bring together industry leaders, academics, policymakers, students and aspiring entrepreneurs to discuss the book’s insights and implications for the future of business in Bangladesh.
AUST held an inauguration ceremony for its new bus service in Dhaka
Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology (AUST) held an inauguration ceremony for its new bus service in Dhaka – aiming to improve student transportation facilities. Initiative aims to provide a more efficient, comfortable and accessible commuting system within and beyond the AUST premises.
AUST board of trust chairman Professor Golam Rahman attended the event and emphasizing its commitment to student welfare and sustainable transportation. AUST pro-vice-chancellor Mohammed Mahbubur Rahman and AUST treasurer Sharmin Reza Chowdhury spoke as special guests. Event also featured faculty members from engineering, architecture, business and social science. Newly launched buses were showcased; and a brief demonstration ride was conducted for attendees.
Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition 2025 occurred on Thursday, February 6, at the American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB)
Ninth Bangladesh Qualifying Rounds of the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition 2025 took place on February 6 at the American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB). Event known as the ‘World Cup of Moot’ featured over 900 law schools from nearly 100 countries.
Bangladesh Qualifying Round the third largest globally and the second largest among South Asian countries featured 44 participating universities and four observer teams. Event was supported by Hearth Bangladesh and AIUB. Ceremony was attended by attorney general of Bangladesh Asaduzzaman and other dignitaries.
Institutional Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) held two meetings with Center for Teaching, Learning and Technology (CTLT) and Global Relations Office (GRO) at National University of Singapore (NUS) on January 23, 2025. Meetings aimed to explore innovative pedagogical practices and strengthen academic ties.
First meeting involved discussions between IQAC and CTLT where Dr. Yuen Jein Soo, Director of Teaching and Learning and Dr. Chin Hwa Ong, Director of Instructional Technology discussed collaborative opportunities in instructional design, curriculum enhancement and technology integration in teaching. Dr. Soo emphasized the importance of student-centered approaches and continuous faculty training while Dr. Ong presented the use of instructional technologies at NUS to enhance student engagement.
Second meeting between IQAC and the GRO focused on strengthening academic collaboration and exploring initiatives in curriculum development and quality assurance.

Daffodil International University (DIU) held its 12th Convocation on February 8, 2025, at Daffodil Smart City in Birulia, Savar, Dhaka. Event was attended by Dr. Bidhan Ranjan Roy Podder Ministry of Primary and Mass Education adviser of Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh and Dr. Hassan Diab former prime minister of the Republic of Lebanon. Dr. Md. Sabur Khan chairman of DIU board of trustees and Dr. Rahman vice chancellor of Daffodil International University also addressed the convocation ceremony.
A total of 3951 students were conferred upon graduation and post-graduation degrees, with 12 best result-oriented graduates awarded the ‘Gold Medal’ in different categories of Chancellor’s, Chairman’s BoT and Vice Chancellor’s Award. The Chancellor’s Gold Medal winners include Abu Farhan Siam of the Pharmacy Department, Jabed Hasan of the Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department, Humayra Asima Mim of the Nutrition and Food Engineering Department, Mashoor Saad Karim of the Tourism and Hospitality Management Department, and Asiful Haque of the Software Engineering Department.
President Dr. Bidhan Ranjan Roy Podder urged the graduates to use their education for the country’s and society’s welfare, urging them to give back to the country multiples of what they have received while contributing to developing a prosperous Bangladesh. He praised the university’s beautiful green campus and its standing at the world-class standard, stating that it has already achieved a permanent certificate by fulfilling all conditions of the education environment, quality standards, performance related to education, and all conditions of private universities.
Dr. Md. Sabur Khan emphasized DIU’s role as a digital and entrepreneurial powerhouse, equipping students with the tools to navigate the complexities of a tech-driven world. The university’s entrepreneurship programs, such as Startup Market, Oitijjher Haat, and Venture Capital Access, have empowered students to turn their ideas into reality.
DIU remains committed to being at the forefront of this transformation, emphasizing skill-focused, outcome-based education (OBE) and fostering “doers and leaders.” The university’s state-of-the-art facilities, including 160 advanced labs, a dedicated sports zone, the Innovation and Incubation Centre, Knowledge Vale, Media Lab, and Gymnasium, are complemented by transformative programs such as Micro-Credential Programs, Employability 360 Degrees, and Art of Living.
Professor Hassan Diab emphasized DIU’s forward-thinking approach, highlighting initiatives like the Blended Learning Centre, Blockchain-Powered Digital Certificate Systems and the transformative “One Student, One Laptop” program that has benefited 65,000 students.

International Crimes Tribunal Bangladesh (ICTB) held a public hearing at North South University to gather evidence related to the “July Massacre 2024.” Hearing aimed to collect testimonies and investigate the events surrounding the tragic incident. North South University Vice-Chancellor Abdul Hannan Chowdhury, Pro Vice-Chancellor Abdur Rob Khan and NSU Registrar Ahmed Tazmin were present. Abdul Hannan Chowdhury urged students and young individuals to present any evidence or information related to the July Massacre. Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam stated that justice will be ensured, and evidence held at hearing will play a crucial role in identifying criminals and expediting judicial process.
Students shared their experiences of torture, police shootings, assaults and attacks by armed members of the Chhatra League and Jubo League. Session focused on collecting statements from witnesses, reviewing documented evidence and examining expert analyses concerning the July Massacre.
As part of the proceedings, students from North South University (NSU), American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB), Independent University Bangladesh (IUB) and other educational institutions participated.
The hearing drew attention from human rights activists, legal scholars, and members of civil society, reinforcing the importance of transparent legal proceedings in addressing historical atrocities.
University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) has reported a record-breaking $17.7 million in research income in fiscal year 2023 according to Canada’s Top 50 Research Universities. This marks the second-largest total in UNBC’s history, just shy of the $17.8 million earned in 2010.
UNBC President Dr. Geoff Payne praised the university’s success in securing funding in a competitive environment, highlighting the innovation and relevance of its projects. University of Northern British Columbia ranked in 10th spot in undergraduate tier and listed at 41 overall. Corporate research income accounted for 6.2% of the total amount, while not-for-profit research income made up 4.5%. UNBC’s research is advancing scientific knowledge and inspiring the next generation of scientists, scholars, and thought leaders by cultivating curiosity and inquiry that students will take into the world.
Brac University Welcomes Spring 2025 Students with Orientation Ceremony
Brac University welcomed its spring 2025 cohort through an orientation ceremony at multipurpose hall of its Merul Badda campus on Thursday, February 6, 2025.
Event marked the beginning of the students’ academic journey, setting the stage for a transformative university experience. Vice chancellor Syed Ferhat Anwar delivered an inspirational speech, urging students to embrace humility, respect and unity. He encouraged them to become responsible citizens, stating, “Love your country and strive to make it proud on the global stage.”
An engaging audiovisual presentation introduced students to Brac University’s rich history and the legacy of its founder Fazle Hasan Abed emphasizing the institution’s commitment to quality education.
Several esteemed university officials also addressed the students, including registrar David Dowland, dean of the School of General Education Samia Huq, Brac Institute of Languages (BIL) Director Professor Shaila Sultana and Humanity Foundation founder Md Adnan Hossain. Their words reinforced Brac University’s dedication to an inclusive and empowering academic environment.

Department of Law at North South University (NSU) held a webinar titled “Extraterritoriality’s Empire: How Self-Determination Limits Extraterritorial Lawmaking” on January 29, 2025. Event was graced by a keynote address from Professor Evan J. Criddle associate dean for Research and Faculty Development, William & Mary Law School who offered insights into the intersection of self-determination and extraterritorial legal frameworks.
Event moderated by Professor Md Rizwanul Islam and discussed the intersection of self-determination and extraterritorial legal frameworks. Professor Criddle’s keynote address highlighted the limitations of enforcing international legal mandates within domestic jurisdictions and offered a nuanced analysis of potential solutions to address these legal complexities. Webinar attracted a diverse audience, including prominent Bangladeshi and international legal scholars, academics, NSU faculty members, students and legal practitioners. Session concluded with an engaging Q&A segment, where attendees actively contributed to the discussion. Event reaffirmed the Department of Law’s commitment to fostering academic dialogue on pressing issues in international law and legal philosophy, cementing its role as a hub for critical legal scholarship.
