NSU Genome Research Institute (NGRI): A Leader in Genomic Science in Bangladesh

Established in 2017, NSU Genome Research Institute (NGRI) at North South University (NSU) is Bangladesh’s first university-based institute dedicated to world-class genomic research. Since its inception, NGRI has contributed significantly to identifying genetic causes of various diseases, building genetic databases, and improving healthcare in the country.

Major Achievements:

Effectiveness of Face Masks in Preventing COVID-19:
NGRI conducted the world’s largest clinical trial on face mask effectiveness, proving that surgical masks significantly reduce COVID-19 transmission, especially among the elderly. The findings were published in the prestigious journal Science and received widespread international media attention.

Research on Klebsiella pneumoniae (Superbug):
This North South University institute has sequenced the genomes of over 1,000 strains of Klebsiella pneumoniae, a drug-resistant bacterium. This data can help develop new treatments against so-called “superbugs.”

Vibrio cholerae Study:
In collaboration with IEDCR and icddr,b, NGRI sequenced over 200 strains of Vibrio cholerae, the bacteria responsible for cholera. The study revealed a direct link between the genetic traits of the bacteria and the severity of the disease.

Colon Cancer Research:
Using next-generation sequencing (NGS), NGRI analyzed mutations across 50 genes associated with colon cancer in Bangladesh. This research supports the development of personalized medicine, allowing for more accurate and targeted treatments.

Virus Detection in Wastewater:
For the first time in Bangladesh, NGRI successfully detected genetic material of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater. This method provides a potential early warning system for future outbreaks.

NSU Genome Research Institute at North South University’s research is making significant contributions to Bangladesh’s healthcare system and gaining international recognition for its innovative approaches and impactful results.
