North South University SHSS Hosts Alumni Colloquium Featuring Research on Law Education, and Career Development

The School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS) at North South University (NSU) hosted the second session of its SHSS Alumni Colloquium Series on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, at the SHSS Conference Room. The academic event showcased research presentations from distinguished NSU alumni, offering insights into critical issues in law, education, and career development in Bangladesh and beyond.

Alumni Presentations Highlight Diverse Research Themes

Three alumni from different SHSS departments presented their research papers:

  • Imtrita Hossain Elma, Department of Law
    Title: “Ecocide as a Crime in Bangladesh: A Constitutional Obligation or Legal Impossibility?”
    Elma explored the legal feasibility of recognizing ecocide as a criminal offense in Bangladesh, stressing its urgency amid growing environmental challenges.
  • Syed Shahnawaz Mohsin, South Asian Institute of Policy and Governance (SIPG)
    Title: “Bridging the Gap – From Campus to Career”
    Mohsin addressed the employability gap in Bangladesh’s job market, advocating for improved career readiness and professional development for university graduates.
  • Anika Afrin, Department of English and Modern Languages
    Title: “The Grass is Not Always Greener: Navigating EFL Teachers’ Emotions and Tensions”
    Afrin analyzed the emotional and institutional struggles of EFL (English as a Foreign Language) teachers in Bangladesh, recommending sustainable support structures based on ecological systems theory.

Event Speakers and Highlights

The colloquium was moderated by Dr. Mohammad Shamsuzzaman, Associate Professor in the Department of English and Modern Languages. The Special Guest was Dr. Mohammed Nuruzzaman, Professor of Political Science at North South University.

Professor Md. Rizwanul Islam, Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences and Professor of Law, delivered the opening remarks and introduced the presenters. Faculty members and students from various SHSS departments actively participated in the discussion sessions.

During the interactive Q&A segment, attendees engaged the speakers with thoughtful questions and feedback, further enriching the academic discourse. Dr. Nuruzzaman also shared insightful comments and commendations on each of the research papers.

The event concluded with Professor Rizwanul Islam presenting commemorative crests to the alumni in recognition of their scholarly contributions and continued engagement with the North South University academic community.
